U12 Football

(under 11 squad) Monaleen v St. Patricks

Our under twelve team continued their battle in this group last week with a tough battle against St Patricks. Our opponents took full advantage of their size against this young squad and dominated large parts of the game. Despite this we rallied back to lose 5-4 to 2-2 at full time, with some great performances from our players.Great credit has to be given to this squad who continue to perform strongly against older opposition and we will soon record our first of many wins.

Girls U12 Football

Monaleen v St. Brigid's

Monaleen held off a strong second half fight back from St Brigid's at Monaleen GAA to record a 6-7 to 1-7 win. Goals from Sarah Shortt and Jane Clohessy supplemented by points from Claire Kelly and Ciara Neville gave Monaleen a good cushion at half time, as the girls made the most of a strong breeze. Excellent defending in the second half from Emma Campbell, Emma Doyle, Margaret Flanagan and Caoimhe Lyons, along with some great goal keeping by Taine Amodeo made sure of the win for Monaleen.

U9/10 Hurling

Munster Inter-Cities Blitz at St. Saviours, Waterford

The Under 9 and Under 10 hurlers had an exciting and enjoyable day out in Waterford on Saturday at the Munster Cities Blitz. This involved teams from Waterford, Limerick and Cork, spread across 9 venues. The players and a few parents had an early rise to leave the clubhouse at 8AM. We arrived at our host club, St. Saviour's, and split into 2 teams. St. Finbarr's from Cork also took part, while Cork club, Passage, unfortunately didn't arrive. Team 1 played against St. Finbarr's and put in a bristling display with Harry Gleeson catching the eye in midfield while Claudio Lopes made his presence felt in attack. Fine displays also from Eoin McCarthy and Muris Bulaéir. Team 2 played St. Saviour's and in a closely fought first half, Niall McGrath in Monaleen's goal made some good saves, while Jack Considine almost poached some scores at the other end, again denied by the goalkeeper. No score at half time, however, St. Saviour's got 3 quick goals early in the second half, but Monaleen responded well with 2 of their own, from Sean O Kane and Morgan Connolly, with Charles Kupur setting up the attacks. The game could have gone either way, but St Saviour's tooka fouth score and won the match.

In the second series of games, the teams switch around, with Team 1 getting the better of St Saviour's, with Caolan Dignam and Paul Power getting some nice scores, and John Moloney and Cathal McCarthy doing superb work around the middle of the pitch.Team 2 put in a very competitive display against St. Finbarr's, and were unlucky to lose on the scoreboard, despite having the better of the play. Micheál O Hanrahan took a fine goal in the first half, with Sean O Kane adding another. Brian O'Donell was immense in midfield with Jack Canny's workrate worrying the Cork boys all day.

In the final game, the Monaleen teams played each other, and this was a fine game of hurling with Niall McGrath, Sean O Kane and Eoghan McCarty picking off some good scores, while the solid tackling in midfield from Morgan Connolly and John Moloney was enough to show that this wasn't being treated as just another training session!

All players received a souvenir T-shirt and a sliotar, as well as goodies kindly provided by St. Saviour's. Too stuffed for lunch in Waterford, McDonalds in Clonmel was chosen for a lively post-game celebration. Squad : Brian O Donnell, Caolan Dignam, Cathal McCarthy, Charles Kutur, Claudio Lopes, Eoghan McCarty, Harry Gleeson, Jack Canny, Jack Considine, John Moloney, Niall McGrath, Michael O Hanrahan, Morgan Connolly, Muiris Bowler, Paul Power, Sean O Kane

Senior Football

Monaleen 4-9 St. Kierans 0-2

While last week was not a happy one for our senior footballers this week saw a huge transformation in results with a resounding win against St Kierans in the second series of the County Football Championship. Monaleen kept their interest alive in this year’s championship by beating St Kierans 4-9 to 0-2 in Asketon on Saturday night last.

Settling into the game immediately, Monaleen geared themselves assiduously into making certain that this game was not going to be a repeat of the previous Friday evening’s result when Peter Russell found the net with a well worked move in the first five minutes. Soon after this Brian Geary repeated the score and within minutes Peter Russell got his brace of goals. The rout continued with Eoin Keating converting a penalty to finish the game as a contest. Alan Kitson did the reverse by gallantly saving a penalty to stymie any response the Westerners might produce. At the interval the score was 4-3 to St Kierans’ single point.

While this was an all-round team performance against a young and inexperienced St Kierans what was of note was the sterling performance from Barry Fitzpatrick at centre-back, having come back from injury. Brian Geary had an outstanding game in which he dominated mid-field and added two points to his goal tally.

The team lined out as follows: Alan Kitson, Darren Bourke, Peter King, Finbar Nash, Eoin Keating, Barry Fitzpatrick, Jack Hoare, Brian Geary, Michael Crowley, Darragh Bonfil, Luke Kavanagh, Cormac Joyce Power, Padraic Quinn, Muiris Gavin, Peter Russell. Subs used: Cian Hickey and Fergus Melody.

The next championship outing for the seniors is the 8th Aug when they play three games in a row against Claughan, Ballysteen and St Patricks to compete the league section. They resume the All County League with games against Adare, Na Piarsaigh, Pallasgreen and Claughan in June and July.

Junior Hurling

Monaleen 3-12 Claughaun 3-4

Our Junior Hurlers are still unbeaten with a fine win against a plucky Claughan in a lively and sporting game in the New Field last Wed. Having made to fight for the points, this win on the score-line of 3-12 to 3-4 was a sweet one as they were chasing the game for large sections before a goal from Eddie Cosgrave sealed the issue and turned around the game in the last quarter.

Monaleen, playing against a considerable breeze, started in a lively fashion with a point from Podge Pond and when Peter Griffin goaled a minute later it seemed that the game would be an easy one. However, Claughan got a grip on the game and were it not for the efforts of Paul Coleman, Noel Brosnan and Alex de Souza and the visitor’s inaccuracy, the game could have been well out of the home sides grasp coming to the interval. A goal from a skilful Pat McCarthy put them ahead at the turn-over by 2-4 to 2-2.

The second half saw Julian Bourke and Keenan Mullane at mid-field and Pa Ryan at centre back, clearing any Claughan threatening attack helping Monaleen to get a grip on the game. John O’Dwyer’s accuracy both from play and frees in chalking up points was the hallmark of the Monaleen display before a foray into the Claughan penalty area ended in Eddie Cosgrave finding the net and carving out a deserved home win. Next Sunday the semi-final of this City league will be played with Monaleen’s opponents as yet unknown.

The Monaleen team on the night was: Gordon Larkin, Alex de Souza, Paul Coleman, Noel Brosnan, John Griffin, Pa Ryan, Eoin O’Brien, Julian Burke, Keenan Mullane, Pat Mc Carthy, John O’Dwyer, Podge Pond, Robert McNamara, Eddie Cosgrave, Peter Griffin. Subs used: Kieran Murphy and Dave Haugh.
