Club NotesApril 18th, 2010Intermediate HurlingOur Intermediate hurlers kept their unbeaten run in the All County Hurling League when they recorded a deserved and hard fought win against a lively Cappamore at home on Tuesday past. Playing with the wind in the first half, Monaleen made it difficult for themselves when they recorded a number of wides from easily scorable chances. A goal from Noel Madden in the second quarter was the difference between the sides as the home side led at the interval by 1-3 to 0-3. Points from Peter Russell added to Maddens important score. The second half saw Cappamore up the tempo with a strong wind behind them and gradually clawed themselves towards even scores. However a well-taken goal from full forward John ODwyer kept a cushion between sides. Finbar Nash, Niall Madden and Pa Ryan were called upon to clear their line continuously while Brian Geary steadied the ship in the final quarter. Shane Mullane and Damien Cosgrave worked hard at the centre of the field and Dermot Foley and Julian Burke were menacing in the forward line. With five more games in what promises to be an interesting and constructive competition, Monaleen past two successes puts them in a strong position for a promising season. Dromin Athlacca is their next opponent but ironically the same sides meet in the first round of the Intermediate Championship a week later. Ballybricken will also provide a double meeting in both league and championship in May and June. Monaleen Intermediate team lined out against Cappamore as follows: Gordon Larkin, Finbar Nash, Niall Macken, Pa Ryan, Keenan Mullane, Brian Geary, John Bartley, Shane Mullane, Damien Cosgrave, Julian Burke, Dermot Foley, Noel Madden, Peter Russell, John ODwyer, Pat McCarthy. Sub: Fergal Kensey for Pat Mc Carthy. Minor HurlingOur minor hurlers had an unlucky opening to their City/East Hurling Championship when they met a sharp Murroe Boher side what defeated them by 3-8 to 3-8. This side has four more games to adjust themselves to the pace with South Liberties, St. Patricks, Kilulta Gaels and Ahane providing the opposition in the coming months. Minor FootballLikewise the minor footballers had a negative start to their championship
season by losing to Na Piarsaigh in Coonagh by 2-9 to 1- 8. Having started
promisingly by leading in the first quarter, Monaleen lost the initiative
by conceding two relatively easy goals within the space of five minutes
to see than trailing by 4 points at the interval. Despite their best
efforts and being without a full strength squad the deficit was not
recovered. The team lined out as follows: Conor Bonfil, Kieran Woods,
Evan Clancy, John Lipper, Cormac Reidy, Kelvin Reale, Eoin White, David
Mulhall, Michael Dooley, Dermot Kavanagh (0-5), David O Brien,
Padraig Pond (1-1) Evan Quinlan, Barry ODell, Luke Murphy (O-2).
Subs: Darragh O Brien and Brian Killeen. This team has five further
games in the Championship after the Leaving Cert exam, so it is early
days yet to achieve their potential. Under 12 CamogieU12 Camogie Monaleen and Murroe Boher played in wonderful sunshine in Monaleen.
