Juvenile Notes
Monaleen U14 Girls took part in the Feile na nOg All Ireland Football
Finals on the weekend 30th of June to 1st of July. It was a daunting prospect
for the Limerick Champions, as they were drawn in Division 1 alongside
the Cork County Champions, St Vals (who hosted Monaleen), the Cork
County Runners Up, Eire Og, and the Laois Feile Champions, Portlaoise.
Host club St. Vals were the first opposition for Monaleens
girls. To say our Limerick girls hit the ground running was an understatement
at half time just one point separated the sides, with Monaleen
missing a penalty and sending over 4 wides. However the strength of Cork
football showed in the second half as St Vals pulled away to win
by an impressive 10 points. It was a very competitive display by Monaleen,
if they had taken their first half chances they could have caused a major
upset against one of the tournament favourites, but despite excellent
performances from Megan OMara and Sarah Geraghty, the Cork County
Champions prevailed (and went all the way to the Division 1 All Ireland
Final!).
The Cork County Runners Up were next, and in their number 14 Eimear Scally,
they possess one of the brightest talents in the game. Sure enough, this
dynamic, skilful and extremely speedy player gave Eire Og an early cushion,
and a shell shocked Monaleen needed to re-group at half time. With brilliant
performances from Caoimhe Lyons and Jane Clohessy, Monaleen surged back
into the game in the second half, and with just minutes left on the clock,
they had pulled the score back to 2-3 to Monaleen, 1-8 to Eire Og, and
Monaleen were pressing hard for the goal that would take them into the
lead. Eire Og showed their class though and rallied with three late points
from Eimear Scally to win by 5 points.
With Monaleen now out of the competition, pride was at stake as they took
on Portlaoise. A brilliant first half performance from Monaleen saw them
thoroughly dominant, with Sarah Shortt, Grace Donovan and Aoife Dooley
outstanding. Ominously however, they scored just one goal for all their
dominance, and Portlaoise made them pay in the second half, rallying to
score 3-3 to just one more goal by Monaleen. The scoreline didnt
tell the picture however, this game and the two against top class Cork
opposition showed that Monaleen and Limerick football can truly mix it
with the very best clubs in the country in the 1st division of the Feile
All-Ireland. All three performance were incredibly brave and skilful,
and a credit to the girls of Monaleen. It was an unforgettable experience
for Monaleen, with St. Vals the host club always warm and welcoming
and very unlucky to lose out in the All Ireland Final to the eventual
winners,
Claregalway. Attached Photo with Team and Mentors. Well done to all involved.
