Club NotesMay 30th, 2010Girls FootballU14 C FinalMonaleen 5-2 Drom-Broadford 4-6There was heartbreak for a very brave Monaleen Girls U14 team on Friday evening in Athlaca when they went down by a single point to a strong Drom-Broadford outfit after a ding-dong struggle in the C championship final. Drom-Broadford made the better start and scored an early goal which led to an early period of dominance inspired by a very strong midfield pairing. However Monaleen came roaring back and some fine interplay between the likes of Megan O Mara, Sarah Short & Nicole Sheehan in the forward line paved the way for Jane Clohessy to smash home a great goal. Lauren o Dell, Orlaith O Leary and Emma Haugh was outstanding. Two further goals scored by star forward Clohessy after being set up by Robyn Gleeson and Sarah Quinlan left the half-time score Drom 2-5 to Monaleens 3-1. Monaleen made a strong start to the 2nd half but did not get the score
their play deserved and it was Drom who broke away to get a goal which
put some daylight between the teams. With Sarah Geraghty and Caroline
Crotty getting on top at midfield Monaleen was enjoying the majority
of possession at this stage of the game. Monaleen was now on top in
most sectors of the field with the full back line of Susan Crotty, Aine
Hegarty (Capt), Caoimhe Ryan and Laura Phelan (Goal) repelling everything
Drom could throw at them. A goal from a free by Caroline Crotty left
just one point between the teams as the game entered injury time but
despite having a number of opportunities, the brave Monaleen team could
not find the score which would have brought the game to extra-time.
Special mention must be made to Niamh Mulhall, Emma Quilter, Eileen
Russell, Karen Fabien, Emma Burns & Aoife Dooley who also contributed
greatly to the teams progress to the final. U14 C Semi-FinalMonaleen 7-6 Kilmallock 7-5Earlier in the week the same u-14 side had come through a true classic
of a semi-final as they overcome a Kilmallock team on a scoreline of
7-6 to 7-5 in a match played in Banogue on Monday night. Again this
was an exceptional team display where after enjoying a 5-3 to 1-4 lead
at half-time, Monaleen had to withstand a strong second-half comeback
from Kilmallock to run out winners by the narrowest of margins. In an
outstanding team display Jane Clohessy again took the scoring honours
with 3 goals with all Monaleen forwards getting on the scoresheet and
Caroline Crotty contributing an impressive 1-3 from midfield. The defence
was superbly marshalled all through by captain Aine Hegarty. Under 12 CamogieCounty Development Squad 2010 Monaleen were well represented at the County Development blitz day
in Croagh on Sun 30th. Monaleen, Cappamore, Murroe/Boher and Ahane combined
forces to form a Limerick East team. Niamh Holmes (corner back), Caoimhe
Lyons (centre back), Claire Kelly and Laura Griffin (half forward),
Aisling Doyle (corner forward) were the Monaleen representatives in
a development squad that put in a lot of preparation over the last 6
weeks. All the hard work paid off as they defeated Limerick South then
Limerick City before putting in a great win against Limerick West. The
Monaleen girls featured strongly in the all round play with Aisling
Doyle top scorer, scoring an impressive 3-3 from play. Caoimhe Lyons
also got on the scoresheet, with a couple of goals and some excellent
long range points. Well done to Niamh, Caoimhe, Claire, Laura and Aisling
- you did the club proud.
Under 10 CamogieThe U10 girls travelled to Adare on Saturday and ran out comfortable winners. Scores from Taine Amodeo, Ruth Heavey, Kerry O Donoghue and Aine Doyle were too much from the home side. The girls remain unbeaten this year after 8 games which is a great achievement.
