Under 8 Hurling Blitz

Monaleen, Na Piarsaigh, St. Patricks

This was the first night of a new era for underage gaelic games in Limerick under the "Lifting the Treaty" programme, which is the new initiative from the County Board to develop hurling and football in Limerick. A series of Under 8 Hurling blitzes under the "Go Games" rules were held throughout the county, with Monaleen being the host venue for this blitz with Na Piarsaigh and St. Patrick's.

Each club brought about 15 players, so three pitches were laid out and close to 50 young lads spent an hour or so of this fantastic evening playing their hearts out!

The team is pictured below :

Under 8 Hurlers at blitz in Monaleen 17/04/2009.
Monaleen1 1-4 St. Patricks 1-4
Monaleen's Team 1 played St. Patricks and this contest was closely fought and in the end it was a draw. Jason Aylward had a great game for Monaleen, sweeping up the St. Patrick's attacks, while James Flannery and Eoin Twomey were superb in the attack. Hugh Corrigan was very skilful in midfield and was a constant threat to St. Patrick's.
Monaleen2 1-0 Na Piarsaigh 1-4
At the same time, Monaleen's Team 2 were putting in a brave display against Na Piarsaigh, and despite outstanding midfield energy from David McMahon and Michael O'Hanrahan, the team ended up losing this encounter to a very sharp Na Piarsaigh team. Niall McGrath pulled off some fine saves in goal, and Mark Harty was unlucky on a number of occasions not to get more scores for Monaleen.

Monaleen1 1-2 Na Piarsaigh 2-2
After a break, Team 1 took on Na Piarsaigh, and ran them very close indeed before eventually losing out by just one goal. This game was notable for Claudio Lopes' great display in goal. Caolan Dignam and Paul Ross were a dynamic midfield duo, while Conor Deegan showed off his great natural hurling ability.
Monaleen2 1-3 St. Patricks 2-0
Team 2 got off to a cracking start with a fabulous long range goal from Caolan Madden. Jack Considine soon added a number of points and was a constant threat to St.Patrick's defence. Muiris Bowler was busy firing in some fine long range shots from midfield. After the half time break, St. Patrick's flooded forward and were rewarded with 2 goals, and it was all smiles as the game ended, every player from all clubs needing a well earned drink and a rest!
